Discover | Bernard Lodge

I happened upon the work of Bernard Lodge in the form of a Canns Down Press greetings card that was on display in the Manchester Art Gallery shop. Featuring a reproduction of a linocut titled 'Heroes' (above), the collection of striking Olympian figures easily caught my eye despite being nestled amongst at least fifty other designs. The bold and dynamic composition is typical of the artist's prints which have a folk influence and a Mid Century aesthetic.

After leaving the Royal College of Art, Lodge joined the BBC as a designer in 1959. He was instrumental in the design and production of the first five title sequences for 'Doctor Who' using novel techniques that utilised a computer controlled rostrum camera.

After fourteen years with the BBC, he went on to form a production company with former colleague, Colin Cheesman, who was previously the Head of Graphic Design at the organisation. Lodge-Cheesman worked on a variety of projects including creating graphic effects for ground breaking feature films 'Alien' and 'Bladerunner' which led to Lodge becoming a director for the Moving Picture Company.

Despite the success in his field, Lodge opted to pursue a new creative direction. After sampling etching at a local college, he bought a printing press and developed his printing skills, mostly using woodcuts and linocuts.

His wife, Maureen Roffey, was a successful children's book illustrator and facilitated Lodge's transition into publishing where, over ten years, he designed twelve books and wrote seven. This sparked Lodge's ambition to produce limited edition prints which is now the focus of his work.

Lodge is based is Sussex, England, and you can purchase his work via his website.
